The Undead Mod

For a while now people have been playing games about the zombie uprising (or outbreak depending on the cause of the apocalypse), the best zombie game at the moment is probably Left 4 Dead 2 and there has been some attempts at making Zombie Apocalypse Simulations, but a love child of both would be Arma2's The Undead Mod.

Arma 2 is a very complicated military simulation game and The Undead Mod adds zombies. Why a large developer hasn't worked on something similar I don't know. There is clearly a market for this.

The Pledge Of Allegiance Is Brainwashing

Ever since I discovered the American Pledge Of Allegiance I have been bothered by the idea of very young kids daily oathing themselves to their flag, when they are too young to understand what they are doing. In recent years I have seen The Pledge, in my view, as more of a brain washing mechanism. The Whitest Kids U' Know, a show on IFC, demonstrates this.



In 1892 when The Pledge was first used in schools it was accompanied with a Bellamy Salute named after the writer of The Pledge. Most people seeing this today would describe it as a Nazi Salute. And so while at war with Germany the salute for The Pledge was changed to a hand over heart gesture. I find this interesting because the parallels of blind nationalism is still there, even with the adapted salute.

The pledge was originally designed to promote national equality for immigrants so everybody saying The Pledge could be seen as American. However I don't see The Pledge as symbolizing national pride, but an attempt to hold onto national pride in an age where America is a declining superpower.

Call Of Duty Elite and Pay Monthly Multiplayer

It happened, Activation will soon be charging a monthly fee for a higher tier multilayer experience in Call Of Duty. What you get is clan play, Facebook integration and gameplay stats. I would like to first pointout that clan play and stats was first supported in ye' olde Unreal Tournament from 1999. And people will pay for it.



The hardcore will stick it's nose in the air and say no, but the casual gamer, the gamer who is the primary demographic for Call Of Duty will pay for it because it will be sold as a premium multilayer experience. If it gets enough people playing it might even become a great multilayer game with, no screaming kids, always play with friends, competitive/comparative micro stats, great servers and continued developer support.

You might be saying 'no no no no no no', but it's here to stay. Just remember to cancel your account if yo try it for a bit and then stop playing.

Some unboxing videos are good, but most are long and very uninformative. So this one is more of an anti-unboxing video.

2D Film Glasses

2d-glasses.com is a site where you can buy 2D glasses for 3D films. I think this is interesting, I am not going to buy a pair so I can say I paid extra to see a 3D film and watched it in 2D thanks to my matching polarised glasses, but some people genuinely hate watching 3D films and need these to enjoy films with friends.

Sean Plott is a StarCraft commentator, strategist, champion, player and goes by the handle Day[9]. He talks about his love for StarCraft, a history of his life with the game and what is has done for him. More importantly it is a story of hard working paying off.

Hawken

Hawken made by indi startup Adhesive Games is a MechWarrior type game. Unfortunatly for MechWarrior fans there hasn't been a good Mech Warrior game for years. However Hawken looks awesome and worth keeping an eye on.

This is a fully automatic tattoo machine. It is an interesting idea because since the design is reproduced and consistent, it shouldn't be considered art. However would that stop people using it?

Gamarjobat are a Japanese Manzai (double act) who do excellent silent physical comedy. Their English isn't amazing, but you wouldn't tell by watching their amazing act.

Cartoon Network has commissioned a new Thundercats TV series and it looks good.

Disney are making a 2.0 TV series for 2012. The early trailer looks very good.

The Internet Movie Firearms Database

Films are filled with firearms, and lots of people know their firearms so it makes sense that someone would create The Internet Movie Firearms Database. It doesn't have every film imaginable because it is a community based projects and concentrates mainly on real firearms. So it's Star Trek First Contact page is (at time of writing) missing the Star Trek Phaser. However the page on The Matrix ("I need guns, lots of guns") is rather detailed, even down to the make and model of tear gas canister used in the abandoned building before Morpheus was captured. It is also interesting to see the number of films that the M16 Has Been In.

Burrito Bison

Burrito Bison, available on NewGrounds is one of the best flash games I have played in a while. It is one of the shoot character across level and see how far you can get while bouncing and earning money as he goes, games. You play a wrestler who has been abducted by a city of GummyBears and must squish your way out of GummyLand. The only innovation I see here is the introduction of barriers that you have to have enough speed when you reach them to power through. I have played a few new games of this type recently, but Burrito Bison is fun because later in the game you can combo large jumps to rescue yourself and the game in general has a lot of personality.

Goon City and Goon Tower are both rather fun. If you have a look around you will find more subtle references in Goon City.

Plug isn't exactly an indi film as it is made by Steambot a company that does a lot of artwork for both the film industry (Avatar and Tron 2.0) and video games industry (FarCry 2, Splinter Cell and Assassins Creed). But it still looks very interesting.

How To Use A Mouse And Keyboard On A Console FPS

The XIM is a really coll device that lets you play with a Keyboard and mouse control interface on your console (360 or PS3). Obviously the immediate benefit is that you can pown everybody by having a way better control interface. The only problem is that it is made by a small group of guys who can't keepup with demand. Still if you have a look at the videos page the advertised experience is very impressive.

A 17 Gigapixel Image

I wouldn't normally like to something that requires a plugin, but it is the Microsoft Research HD View Plugin and I trust those guys. The plugin allows you to view the mountains on yosemite-17-gigapixels.com. A site that had five mountain photographs that will amaze you because of their size. It's like having your own spy satellite.

I have a good feeling about this year.

The Best Film I Seen This Year

In the last year I have watched 128 films (a complete alphabetical list is found at the end of this post). And at the end of the year it is an easy post to write about what my general recommendation as to what the best film I seen was. To do this I first generate a short list of what I rated rated 5/5 on LoveFilm (read Netflix if in US) and then have a look at the site's meta data to see what others who seen the films thought. And then the film me and the meta data think is best is my recommendation for the year.

This year the film I can recommend to most people rather easily is Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.



P.S. IGN and I am sure a lot of others as my meta data shows, will claim that Inception is the best film of 2010. I only gave Inception 4/5 because I never cared about the characters or their mission.

Color Scheme Designer is a great little JavaScript based web tool for creating a matching colour scheme for websites. It even includes a website preview that scarily seems to look great no-matter what colour scheme you choose.

Wikileaks On Why Leaking Is Good

WikiLeaks is a website dedicated to releasing leaked information. It isn't doing anything new, leaked information has been a large part of Journalism for a while, but what is different that the leaks are delivered in an almost no edited format.

Recently WikiLeaks got hold of 251,287 leaked US Embassy Cables. These are short reports about all manor of things. I found the report on colonel Gaddafi rather interesting, but there has been a lot of criticism towards the leaks; mainly around the possibility that they would harm diplomatic relations and cost lives. Reading the reports you can see many of the names have been removed, so I am not convinced by the loss of life argument, but there was a TED talk earlier in the year with WikiLeak found Julian Assange giving his account on why WikiLeaks is a force for good.
WikiLeaks is under (government?) attack, so has several Mirror Sites setup.

Free Documentaries

Documentary-Film.net is a network that distributes documentaries for free. Most of them seem to be professional looking, that isn't to say the information is accurate or impartial in all of them, there is a good selection.

Kinect And 3D Space

The Kinect has a camera and a 3D depth sensor, so when you are waving your arms around it can translate them to an avatar in a game. However since Kinect got hacked, we will start seeing some interesting applications. This video isn't an application, but it is a cool way of displaying the two forms of visual data the Kinect is receiving.

MineCraft Cartography

MineCraft is a simple game of Mining a randomly generated world. You Mine raw materials, create tools, build a house or a mine and fight monsters that appear at night. Some players have been very creative and built cities out of the simple blocks that the MineCraft world is constructed from. BBC Some Does GOOD Technology Coverage!!!

I like whatever happened at the BBC recently to caused their technology coverage to reach an acceptable level of quality.



However some of their science coverage still leaves a little to be desired. This Piece on meat from cloned animals just talks through the process and doesn't cover the reasons for or against the technology. Despite my love of science and my strong belief we need to spend more on science and make greater strides, I think cloning farm animals like this is a mistake. Many cloned animals are born with defects and the farm animals we have today where created through a process of selective breeding which is perfectly adequate for our purposes.

Ratings Out Of Five

I have watched many films and rated many films through film rental services and looking at how I rate films and how others rate them out of five I have come up with a breakdown of the "out of five" rating system.

1/5 A bad film, makers didn't even try.

2/5 Makers tried to create a good film, but the parts just didn't come together.

3/3 An average film, good, entertaining, but nothing more.

4/5 A film where everything comes together so well it clicks.

5/5 A film that is better than the sum of it's parts and stands as an excellent exsample of film-making.


What I like about the five point rating system is it's ability to give more detail that just a thumbs up or down, but also the ability to not judge a film too precisely and allow each viewer to experience the film on their own terms. Giving a film a five out of five rating says it is very good, but doesn't put an unnecessarily high level of expectation that a ten out of ten, or a one hundred out of one hundred rating would.

Anime Dub Vs Sub

Normally Anime fans regard the discussion of original subtitles vs dubbed English with disdain, because historically dubs have been terrible. No terrible as in an audio quality way, but terrible because the dubbers change the script to please a younger western audience. This can mean that characters nolonger swear, subplots are removed, cultural references get a more US flair and most scripts loose their edge.

In the last ten years this however has started to change and companies performing the dubs know that fans hate it when they change things, so they have been trying to do more unabridged dubs. For me this peaked when I seen the English Dub of Beck. I was shocked to discover the Dub was better than the original sub!

The reason for this is that Beck is about a native Japanese speaking band with no knowledge of English who sing English songs. This means they have a strong Japanese accent on all the songs and for myself an English speaker this was slightly jarring, the English dub however has none of this. And with an almost completely unabridged script, it's brilliant. I highly recommend the sub all the time, but the dub is better.

Data Through Visible Light

When I heard about Data Through Visible Light, I thought it was something about fibre optics, but this is something different. This is an LED based light transmitting a data stream through alpha waves (light in the range of human vision). On the surface this might seem pointless, but it has a few tantalising applications.

Imagine an advert on television where by using a mobile phone camera you could download the product. Or if you are in a club the lights could tell you what music was playing. Or if a power LED on a product could stream detailed information about what it was doing. Imagine a situation where you have twenty or more televisions that you want to display the same image, in sync from the same video source, with current technology that would take a lot of cables, but with this the screens would only need to see the light from a single source.

The future of all electronics will be to make them wireless and this will be another tool. Wither it will be a staple of consumer electronics is yet to see, but all mobile phones have cameras.

Money Island 2 Out Now On STEAM

Money Island 2 Special Edition came out on Steam (Link). Playing it, it seems a lot more polished than the last Special Edition. The developers commentary is excellent too.

Power Rangers And It's Japanese Twin
