Smart Clothing

This is a set of cufflinks that blink in time with a Macbook's sleep blinking. Interesting, but only if you are in meetings a lot with a Macsbook is sleep mode.

Watching Films On An iPhone

I don't understand how someone could watch a film on a mobile phone. Maybe if they had time to devote to it while they are on a very long train ride or something, but I am largely with David Lynch.

Apple Says No Thanks To Bluray

Apple computers are premium computers that are stylish and do everything in HD because when you buy a Mac you know you are buying the latest technology. But for some reason you can't get one with a Bluray player.

One might think that this was a licensing issue, but Apple isn't bothering with Blueray because users are already buying movies from iTunes.

Apple 27th New Product Announcement Prediction

I predict that the new product that will be announced on the 27th (next wednesday) will be an eBook reader called the iBook.

Here is my reasoning:

  1. This fits the rumours of a tablet like device.

  2. The Kindle is Amazon's top selling product, so there is clearly a market for eReaders. This is a new device that is on a rapid upward trend.

  3. Most eReaders on the market today are either rather ugly or feel like a first generation product. So there is a gap in the market for an eReader with an Apple quality feel to it.

  4. Digital distribution of eBooks isn't far from Apple's core competency with the iTunes store. They could just bolt it on like they did with TV, Movies and iPhone applications.

This doesn't fit a lot of the rumours because a lot of the supposed leaks talk of an iSlate that is just a large iPhone type interface.

Pen & Paper Notes

I remember talking to someone who wrote their final university paper with a typewriter and hearing how difficult that was makes me glad that I had a word processor. But even though it has only been two years since I graduated, my Pen & Paper note-taking might be considered Oldschool Already!

Macbook Air's Reserved Reactions (Rant)

It has been a few days since the Macbook Air was announced and I have been very surprised at the reserved reactions from the announcement, because normally anything Apple announces is eaten up by Mac fans, but with the Macbook Air everybody has been very sober. Even the mighty Kevin Rose was like, meh:

Normally the reaction that I give to most things Apple is "I don't need it" or "I can get the same thing cheaper and better elsewhere", but with the Macbook Air I would have bought one already if I had £1,199 to spend.

When I saw the Macbook Air for the first time I envisioned being able to carry it around in my backpack, without feeling like I was carrying around a brick. And then being able to surf the web and do work wherever I wanted because it's so portable. So for me the fact that it doesn't have anykind of built in diskdrive or ethernet port doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Personally I find laptop keyboards to be horrible to type with, track pads and nipples are cumbersome compared to a mouse, the machines themselves are slower than a comparable desktop of the same specification, they are difficult to fix, break more often and will need to be replaced sooner than the same specification machine as a desktop. So the reactions that the Macbook Air has been receiving has reinforced my long held view that computer users in-general don't want a laptop because it is portable, but because it is somekind of status symbol and most people would be happier sitting infront of a Black Widescreen Brick than something you could actually take outside, carry in a bag or use comfortably like desktop computer. And yet with all the 'meh' reactions this for me this is the first product that has made me seriously considering a Mac (other than Windows 98).

iPhone Delightful, but Missing One Feature

So I finished watching the Apple Presentation where Steve unveiled the iPhone and I was concerned that they wouldn't have the multi-touch LCD that devices needed to make a screen keyboards really work, but they have, so I think indeed they are five years ahead of everybody else, but where is the built-in GPS!?

There is a section of the iPhone presentation where Steve is showing the web browsing and Google Maps feature, which means that the phone has not just England's citys and roads (like my TomTom-GPS has), but the whole WORLD! And it can tell you where all the Starbucks, McDonalds, Burger Kings, Hospitals, Taxi Companies, Cinemas etc are in relation to wherever you are viewing and tell you their phone numbers, so you can phone them up wherever you are (quite a useful feature to have on a phone I think you will agree). BUT! The phone doesn't know where IT, IS, because it doesn't have built-in GPS. I am sure Apple will fix this slight issue in the next version, but for me I want GPS in my phone because that means that I will never ever have to face the minor inconvenience of being lost ever again.

Nodought Apple's competitors in the form of Nokia and Sony Ericsson will try and get there first, but I do believe the iPhone is indeed one of those Milestone devices in history. And is yet another device that is better than it was envisioned in Star Trek as looking at it now the DataPad looks old.

And I will happily buy one, when it supports GPS or Better.
